WHAT ARE THE SUBSTANCES THAT MAKE UP DERMAL FILLERS ?
Dermal fillers are composed of variety of substances some naturally occuring and some synthetic.
1. HYALURONIC ACID
This is naturally occuring , already present in our skin. It keeps the skin hydrated.
This is one of the most common dermal fillers used.
One special advantage of this is that they can be dissolved by hyaluronidase in case of adverse events or if the person dislikes the appearance. These are premixed with lidocaine to minimize discomfort.
These fillers lasts for 6-12 months or more.
Some of the FDA approved HA fillers are:
Juvederm products- juvederm voluma, volbella, juvederm xc, vollure, Restylane products,Belotero balance.

2. CALCIUM HYDROXYLAPATITE (CaHA)

These are mineral like compounds found primarily in bones.
These stimulate natural collagen and are used for deeper lines and wrinkles.
This has also been used in dentistry and reconstructive surgery for years.
CaHA lasts for about 12 months.
FDA approved CaHA is Radiesse.
3. Poly-L-Lactic acid :

This has been used for many years in medical devices such as dissolvable stitches.
These synthetic fillers stimulate collagen and results are gradual.
Their effect lasts for more than 2 years.
FDA approved poly-l-lactic acid filler is Sculptra.
4. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)
It takes the form of microsphere or tiny ball that remains beneath the skin indefinitely to provide continued support.
It is more durable but has potential complication such as forming lumps.
FDA approved PMMA is Bellafil.
5. AUTOLOGOUS FAT INJECTION
