WHAT ARE THE COMMON TESTS TO CHECK  IF YOU ARE  DIABETIC ???

1. RANDOM BLOOD GLUCOSE (with or without FASTING)

This is the cheapest test which is done to know your blood sugar .
However it may not reflect the real picture going on in your body regarding the level of the blood glucose as it may vary with your meal .
Values ranges FOR RBS  140- 199 mg/dl (AFTER MEAL)
FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE RANGES FROM 100-125 mg/dl

2.HbA1c 

This is the gold standard test to know the actual status of your blood sugar in your body.
This have no relation with the type of your last meal .

We measure blood sugar of last three months which is equivalent to the age of your RBC i:e 120 days .

Normal value ranges from 5.7- 6.4 .

CAN GIVE FALSE RESULT TOO-
This test can also give false result if you are having any hemoglobinopathies like sickle cell disease or G6PD deficiency etc.

3.FRUCTOSAMINE ASSAY

In cases , where we cannot do hba1c , this test acts as the main line of treatment .

It tells us about blood glucose levels of last 14 days.

Its normal range in relation to the serum albumin concentration are 200-285 µmol/L, when the serum albumin concentration level is 5 g/dL.

Can also give fast results in cases of RENAL FAILURE. 

4. ORAL GTT

This is oral glucose tolerance test which is indicated only at 26-28 weeks of gestation (during pregnancy ).                                                                                                                                                                        Women with GESTATIONAL DIABETES have 50% chances of having full blown DM in their lifetime.
