When should I start brushing my baby's teeth?
INFANT
You should start taking care of your baby's oral hygiene as soon as their first tooth emerges, typically around 6 months of age. However, even before their teeth come in, you can gently clean their gums with a soft, damp washcloth or a silicone finger brush to remove any bacteria and help maintain a clean oral environment.
Once the first tooth appears, use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush designed specifically for infants. You can begin by using just water or a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). As your child reaches age 2, you can increase the amount of toothpaste to a pea-sized amount.
When brushing your baby's teeth, follow these steps:
Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
Use gentle, circular motions to clean the front, back, and chewing surfaces of the teeth.
Brush for about two minutes, twice a day – ideally in the morning and before bedtime.
Encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste but avoid rinsing with water, as a small amount of fluoride remaining in the mouth can provide extra protection against cavities.
In addition to brushing, it's essential to schedule your baby's first dental appointment around their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing, whichever comes first. Regular dental check-ups can help monitor your child's oral health, provide guidance on oral hygiene practices, and address any potential issues early on.
Also, remember to promote good oral hygiene habits by avoiding sugary drinks, limiting sugary snacks, and encouraging a well-balanced diet. As your child gets older, teach them to brush their teeth independently and eventually introduce flossing to maintain optimal oral health.
