When should I start introducing solid foods to my baby?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend introducing solid foods to your baby around 6 months of age. It's important to remember that every baby develops at their own pace, so the exact timing may vary. However, 6 months is the general guideline to ensure that your baby is developmentally ready and has had enough time to build up their digestive system.

Before starting solid foods, look for the following signs that your baby is ready:

  1. Good head and neck control: Your baby should be able to hold their head up and maintain a steady position.

  2. Sitting up with support: Your baby should be able to sit up with little or no assistance, as this helps them swallow food more easily.

  3. Loss of the tongue-thrust reflex: This is the reflex that causes babies to push food out of their mouth with their tongue. Your baby should be able to move food to the back of their mouth and swallow.

  4. Interest in food: Your baby may show curiosity about food, such as reaching for it, watching you eat, or opening their mouth when food is offered.

When introducing solid foods, start with single-ingredient purees, such as rice cereal, pureed fruits, or vegetables. Offer one new food at a time and wait at least 2-3 days before introducing another to identify potential allergies or intolerances. Gradually increase the texture and variety of foods as your baby becomes more comfortable with eating.

Remember to continue breastfeeding or offering formula, as it remains an essential source of nutrition for your baby throughout their first year of life. Always consult your pediatrician for guidance and support when introducing solid foods to your baby.
