Tummy time is an essential activity for newborns and can be started as soon as you bring your baby home from the hospital. It helps promote the development of neck, shoulder, and upper body muscles, as well as prevent flat spots on the back of your baby's head (positional plagiocephaly).

To introduce tummy time to your neonate, follow these guidelines:

  1. Choose a suitable time: Make sure your baby is awake, alert, and in a good mood. Avoid tummy time immediately after a feeding, as it may cause discomfort or spitting up.

  2. Start with short sessions: In the beginning, aim for 2-3 minutes of tummy time, 2-3 times a day. Gradually increase the duration and frequency as your baby grows and becomes more comfortable with the activity.

  3. Use a flat surface: Place your baby on a clean, flat surface, such as a play mat or blanket on the floor. Avoid using soft surfaces like beds, sofas, or pillows, as they pose a risk of suffocation.

  4. Supervise your baby: Always supervise your baby during tummy time to ensure their safety.

  5. Engage your baby: Encourage your baby to lift their head by getting down to their eye level, talking to them, and using toys or mirrors to capture their attention.

  6. Offer support: If your baby is struggling with tummy time, you can offer support by rolling up a small towel or blanket and placing it under their chest and armpits. This will help lift their upper body slightly, making it easier for them to lift their head.

  7. Monitor your baby's cues: If your baby becomes fussy or tired during tummy time, it's okay to stop the session and try again later. Gradually, your baby will become more comfortable and enjoy tummy time more.

Remember that every baby is different, and some may take longer to adapt to tummy time. If you have concerns about your baby's progress or development, consult your pediatrician for guidance and support.
